The player controls the boy throughout the game As is typical of most games platforms in two dimensions, the boy can run left or right, jump, climb on ledges short or tall down ladders and ropes, and push or pull objects. Limbo is presented through charts levels of dark gray, and with minimalist ambient sounds, creating a sinister, spellbinding environment. Dark also hide numerous environmental and physical hazards such as deadly bear traps on the forest floor or lethal monsters that lurk in the shadows, like a giant spider subjects. Among the risks are to incandescent, which bind to the boy's head and force him to go in one direction until you delete them.
