The game takes place in New York City, where a virulent plague is spreading Known Blacklight-through Manhattan. Those infected are mutated monsters more or less hideous form, an uncontrollable urges to kill all uninfected life-forms. At the center of it is the protagonist, Alex Mercer, an incredibly powerful shapeshifter, parallel to the plot of the game is the ability to play the game as a sandbox-style video game giving the player freedom to move to Manhattan.
